Layer-by-layer diagnostics: from the network to the app

When Happ isn't working, the key is not to change everything at random but to work through the connection layers in order. A proxy connection runs through a chain: the device's local network → the provider's access → an active subscription → a working key (configuration) → the selected server → the Happ client itself. A failure at any of these levels looks the same — "no internet through the proxy" — so diagnostics are done strictly from top to bottom.

Pin down the symptom more precisely. The connection doesn't establish at all, it establishes but no traffic flows, it drops after a few seconds, or it works slowly and unstably — these are four different classes of problem. The first more often points to the key or server, the second to routing and exclusion lists, the third to the protocol and MTU, the fourth to node load.

A practical trick: try a different server from the list and a different network (for example, mobile internet instead of Wi-Fi). If everything works on another server or another network, the problem is localized and you don't need to check the remaining layers. This quick test saves time and immediately rules out half of the causes.

Layer 1. Internet and the provider's network

First, make sure basic internet works without Happ. Turn the proxy off completely and open any site by IP or a regular resource. If pages don't load without the proxy either, the problem is in the device's network itself, not in Happ: restart the router, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and check your balance and plan limits.

Check DNS separately. Some providers tamper with DNS responses, which prevents the client from resolving the subscription server's address, so the connection won't come up. The sign is a proxy "stuck on connecting" that never reaches the handshake. Switching the device to a public DNS or enabling DNS-over-HTTPS in the client settings, if that option is available, helps.

Take the carrier network's behavior into account. Mobile carriers and public Wi-Fi sometimes throttle non-standard ports and drop long-lived connections. If Happ works on home internet but not on mobile (or vice versa), the issue is filtering on the network side, and it's solved by changing the server or protocol, not by reinstalling the app.

The next most common reason Happ isn't working is an outdated key. A configuration has an expiration date and parameters that are periodically updated on the server side. If it has expired or the parameters on the node have changed, the old key stops coming up. Open your subscription and check its status and expiration date.

Don't add the key as a string manually if a subscription-by-link is available. Importing a subscription lets the client pull the current server list and updated parameters automatically. A one-off key pasted once becomes outdated over time and doesn't update — this is a typical cause of "it worked yesterday, not today".

Check the device limit. A single key is usually meant for a limited number of active sessions. If you've connected it on several devices at once, the extra sessions may be dropped by the server. Disconnect the devices you don't need or request a separate key. After updating the subscription, force a configuration refresh in the client rather than just reconnecting.

Layer 3. Server: selection, load, and protocol

A specific node may be overloaded, under maintenance, or temporarily unavailable from your region. This isn't a Happ malfunction — it's the state of an individual server. The first action is always the same: pick a different server from the list and reconnect. If the alternative node comes up, the original was simply unavailable.

Pay attention to the protocol and transport. Different servers use different ways of establishing a connection, and in a given network one transport may be blocked while another passes freely. If your list has nodes with different protocols, cycling through them is a quick way to find a working option without deep configuration.

Check the latency to the node. High ping and packet loss produce the "connected, but everything lags and drops" effect. Choose a geographically close server with low latency — it's noticeably more stable than a distant node, even if it formally shows as connected. For heavy traffic (video, downloads), channel stability matters more than nominal geography.

Layer 4. App, permissions, and routing

If the network, subscription, and server are fine but Happ still isn't working, the issue is in the client or the device settings. Close the app completely (don't just minimize it) and launch it again, then reinstall the VPN profile. On iOS the connection comes up only after you confirm the VPN configuration in the system settings — if the permission isn't granted, the tunnel silently fails to be created.

On Android, check that the system is allowed to create a VPN connection and that power saving isn't evicting Happ from memory in the background. Add the app to the battery optimization exclusions. On Windows, make sure a firewall or antivirus isn't blocking the client, and if necessary run it with administrator rights — some network operations require elevated privileges.

Check routing and exclusion lists separately. If you configured split tunneling or added addresses to exclusions, an error in these rules can route the needed traffic past the proxy — externally this looks like "the proxy isn't working", even though the tunnel is up. Temporarily disable the exclusion rules and test the connection on a clean configuration: if it starts working, the cause is in routing, not in the connection. After that, add the lists back one by one to find the conflicting rule.
