System requirements and preparing Windows
Happ on PC runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11 in their 64-bit editions. On 32-bit builds and on end-of-life versions (Windows 7/8.1) running the client is not recommended: the system routing APIs it relies on behave unreliably there. For basic operation 4 GB of RAM and 150–200 MB of disk space are enough, but when actively tunneling several applications it is more comfortable to keep some memory headroom.
Happ creates a virtual network adapter (TUN) on the PC and edits the routing table, so it is best to run it as administrator the first time — otherwise Windows will not let it bring the interface up. Make sure in advance that the latest system updates are installed: an outdated network stack and old adapter drivers are the most common causes of drops and DNS loss.
Separately, check your security environment. Third-party firewalls and antivirus "network shields" can block the creation of the TUN adapter or cut off the client's outbound connections. If the PC has corporate protection or an employer's VPN agent, arrange the setup ahead of time — two tools intercepting traffic at the same time will conflict over the routes.
Installing Happ on PC
Download the Happ distribution for Windows from a trusted source specified in your access panel or in the service Telegram channel, and verify the checksum if it is published next to the file. This protects against a tampered installer — which is critical, since the client gets the right to change the PC's network configuration.
Run the installer and, if Windows shows a SmartScreen warning about an unknown publisher, open "More info" and continue the installation deliberately. Once it finishes, do not rush to enable launch on system startup: turn it on only after you are sure the basic connection is stable.
Run it for the first time with administrator rights so the client registers the virtual adapter correctly. If a User Account Control (UAC) prompt appears on launch, confirm it: without this Happ will not be able to manage the routes. After initialization the adapter stays in the system and there is no need to elevate rights again.
Connecting via a subscription key
Happ on Windows connects not with a login and password, but via a subscription key — a string like vless://, ss:// or a subscription link that contains the server address, port, and the encryption and transport parameters. Copy this string in full, with no spaces or line breaks: any extra character breaks the parsing of the configuration.
In the client interface, choose to add a configuration from the clipboard or via a subscription URL. A subscription link is preferable to a single key: the client periodically re-reads it and pulls in the current list of servers, so when the service rotates nodes on a schedule you do not need to re-enter anything by hand.
After importing, check the latency to the nodes with the built-in ping and pick the nearest working server. If several configurations respond, go by the lowest ping and stability, not just geography: an overloaded nearby node often loses to a more distant but uncongested one.
Routing and split tunneling
The key advantage of Happ on PC is flexible routing. Instead of pushing all traffic through a single tunnel, you set rules: which domains and subnets go through the proxy, and which go directly. This is split tunneling, which reduces load on the channel and removes unnecessary latency for local and trusted resources.
Build an exclusion list to fit your tasks. It makes sense to route banking services, the local network (the 192.168.0.0/16 and 10.0.0.0/8 ranges), internal corporate resources, and heavy downloads that do not need the tunnel directly. Send the rest of the traffic through the chosen server. Rules are defined by domains, IP subnets and, if needed, by processes.
Set up DNS handling separately. To rule out leaks, DNS queries for tunneled traffic must go through the proxy, not through your provider. If after connecting resources open by IP but not by name, DNS is almost always to blame — check that resolution is directed into the tunnel and not around it.
Stability, speed and common errors
Speed on a PC comes down to three things: the chosen node, the transport, and the virtual adapter's MTU. If the speed drops after connecting or heavy traffic breaks, start with the MTU — a value around 1400–1420 often solves fragmentation issues on unstable channels. Then cycle through the servers: the difference between nodes can be several-fold.
The "adapter cannot be created" or "TUN interface failed" error almost always means insufficient rights or a block by the antivirus — restart the client as administrator and add it to the exclusions of your protection software. If the connection is established but pages do not load, check the system time (a mismatch breaks the TLS handshake) and the correctness of DNS in the routing rules.
Periodic drops on Wi-Fi are cured by enabling auto-reconnect and keep-alive in the profile settings, as well as disabling power saving for the network adapter in Windows Device Manager. Under hard network-level blocking, switch the configuration's transport to a masking option — provided such a profile is supplied by your service.
Frequently asked questions
Are administrator rights required for Happ on Windows?
For the first launch — yes. The client creates a virtual TUN adapter and edits the PC's routing table, and that requires elevated rights. After the adapter is registered, day-to-day use usually runs without a UAC prompt, but when you update the client the rights may be needed again.
How does a subscription key differ from a single key?
A single key (vless://, ss://) describes one server and does not update itself. A subscription link is a URL from which the client periodically pulls the current list of nodes and their parameters. On a PC a subscription is more convenient: when the service rotates servers on a schedule, the configuration updates without manual re-entry.
How do I set up split tunneling on a PC?
In the routing rules, split the traffic: put the domains and subnets that should go directly (local network, banks, internal resources) into the exclusion list, and route everything else through the chosen server. The connection is up but sites don't open — what should I do?

Why does the speed drop after connecting?

Does Happ on PC conflict with another VPN or firewall?
Yes — if two tools intercept traffic at the same time, they compete for the routes and the adapter. Disable the third-party VPN agent while Happ is running, and add the client itself to the exclusions of your firewall and antivirus, otherwise the creation of the TUN adapter may be blocked.
