Installing Happ on iPhone: from the App Store to your first connection

Where to get Happ for iPhone

In the App Store the app is called Happ Proxy Utility. It is an official client built on the Xray core, not "just another VPN": the program itself is free, installs in a couple of taps, and requires no registration. You pay only for access — the subscription key — while installing and updating the app costs nothing.

There are two listings in the App Store — one for a Russian account and a global one. Which of them you see depends on the country of your Apple ID, not on your iPhone's language. If the app doesn't show up in search, open the direct link to the right listing from the "Download" section — it leads to the card in your App Store region.

Right after installing, check the version: keep Happ updated to the latest release. New protocols and transports (Reality, XHTTP, modern TLS variants) appear in fresh builds, and an outdated version may fail to connect to a server that already runs on a new transport.

How to add a key and subscription to the app

Legal access to Happ is granted only by your own key — official, paid, or trial, obtained from the service's Telegram bot. The key arrives as a subscription link: most often an address starting with happ:// or a regular https link to a subscription file. A subscription (rather than a single server) is the most convenient option: with it the app pulls and updates the server list on its own.

The fastest way to import on iOS is via the clipboard. Copy the entire link in Telegram, open Happ, tap "+" and choose "Import from clipboard". The app recognizes the content and creates a subscription profile automatically.

There are two alternative paths as well. If the key is shown as a QR code, choose QR import and point your camera at it. And links of the happ:// form work as a deep link: tapping such a link right in Telegram opens the app and offers to add the profile without manual copying. After importing, the subscription appears in the list, and the available servers appear inside it.

First connection and allowing the VPN profile

On the first launch of the tunnel, iOS will show a system prompt like "Happ Proxy Utility would like to add VPN configurations". This is standard iOS behavior: any app that brings up a tunnel must register a VPN profile at the system level. Tap "Allow" and confirm the action with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode — after that the profile appears in Settings → General → VPN & Device Management.

Pick a server from the subscription and turn on the connection toggle. When the status changes to "Connected", the VPN icon lights up in the iPhone status bar. Verify the result: open any IP-checking service — the address and country should switch to the server's.

To have the connection come up on its own, enable auto-connect (On-Demand). In this mode iOS starts the tunnel when you go online, and you don't need to open the app manually every time — handy if you use Happ constantly.

Servers and routing on iOS

If the subscription has several servers, start with the one that has the lower latency (ping). Happ can measure ping across the list — favor geographically nearby nodes, they usually give better speed and stability. Manually choosing a server is preferable to "auto" when predictable connection matters.

Full per-app split tunneling, like on Android or PC, doesn't exist on iOS — the system doesn't give clients that level of control. Splitting traffic on iPhone is done through routing rules inside the configuration: domains and subnets are assigned to direct/proxy at the Xray core level. If you need exceptions (for example, routing banking apps directly), these rules are set on the subscription side, not with toggles inside iOS itself.

When switching servers, don't forget to reconnect. iOS keeps a single VPN configuration active, so switching a node inside Happ is applied after the tunnel is brought back up — the app does this automatically, but the connection drops for a second.

Common iPhone errors and how to fix them

The app can't be found in the App Store. The cause is almost always the Apple ID region. Use the direct link to the right listing from the "Download" section, or temporarily switch your account's country to one where the card is available.

After importing it says "no connection" or the tunnel won't come up. Check three things in order: whether the VPN profile is allowed (Settings → VPN), whether the key has expired, and whether the subscription link is outdated. An expired or revoked key looks like "server not responding" — refresh your access in the Telegram bot.

It connects, but there's no internet. Most often the culprit is the wrong time on the device (an incorrect date and time break the TLS handshake — turn on automatic time setting) or a problematic server. Switch the node, refresh the subscription with a swipe down, and try again.

The tunnel drops on its own or conflicts. Enable On-Demand and remove Happ from background-activity restrictions and Low Power Mode. Remember: only one VPN profile is active at a time — turn off third-party VPN apps, otherwise iOS will take over control of the tunnel.
