Happ Proxy Mode: How It Works and When to Use It
Alongside its full VPN tunnel, Happ also provides a proxy mode running on Xray-core. Both draw on the same key issued through the Telegram bot, yet they route the device's traffic differently when it comes to getting past restrictions. Here's what sets proxy apart from VPN and when proxy is the better match.
How VPN mode works
In VPN mode, Happ creates a virtual network interface and pushes all of the device's traffic through it — browser, apps, and system services alike. It's the most predictable way to connect: there's no per-app setup, and everything begins working the instant the key is added.
What sets Proxy mode apart
Proxy mode goes about it differently: Happ runs a local proxy server built on Xray-core, and only the traffic deliberately aimed at it — a particular browser or apps configured to use that proxy — actually passes through. That comes in handy when you'd like to redirect a chosen few programs rather than the entire device, without standing up a system-wide VPN tunnel.
When proxy outdoes VPN
Happ Proxy mode is worth reaching for when:
- a system-wide VPN clashes with other software or the device's network settings;
- you want firmer control over which traffic runs through the server to sidestep blocks and which goes direct;
- you only mean to send a browser or a specific app through the server, not the whole device.
If you're after precise per-app routing while staying in VPN mode, take a look at the split tunneling guide at /en/split-tunneling/.
What proxy mode is built on
VPN and Proxy both run on Xray-core and share the same key issued in the Happ Telegram bot — there's no separate encryption protocol to set up by hand; the sole distinction is how traffic makes its way into the tunnel. The full details are on /en/proxy/.
Switching Proxy on
The mode is enabled directly in the Happ app's settings on whichever platform you're using, and desktop systems also come with a dedicated Happ Proxy Utility that makes integrating it with other software easier. The general connection steps are covered on /en/setup/.
Common questions
What's the essential difference between Proxy and VPN in Happ?
VPN sends the whole device's traffic through a tunnel, whereas Proxy carries only the apps or browser set up to use the local proxy.
Does Proxy mode call for its own key?
No — it relies on the very same key as VPN mode, issued through the Happ service Telegram bot.
Which platforms can run Happ Proxy?
Every platform Happ supports, plus an extra utility for desktop systems that streamlines the configuration.
Unsure whether to go with VPN or Proxy?
Pick VPN for a straightforward connect-and-forget setup covering the whole device; opt for Proxy when you need selective routing for particular programs.
