Happ Proxy Mode: How It Works and When to Use It
Besides its full VPN tunnel, Happ also offers a proxy mode running on Xray-core. Both rely on the same key issued through the Telegram bot, but they route device traffic differently when it comes to getting around restrictions. Here's what separates proxy from VPN and when proxy is the better fit.
How VPN mode operates
In VPN mode, Happ sets up a virtual network interface and sends the device's entire traffic through it — browser, apps, and system services alike. It's the most predictable way to connect: there's no per-app setup, and everything starts working as soon as the key is added.
What makes Proxy mode different
Proxy mode works another way: Happ runs a local proxy server built on Xray-core, and only the traffic explicitly pointed at it — a specific browser or apps configured to use that proxy — actually goes through it. That's useful when you want to redirect select programs rather than the whole device, without spinning up a system-wide VPN tunnel.
When proxy beats VPN
Happ Proxy mode is worth using when:
- a system-wide VPN conflicts with other software or the device's network settings;
- you need tighter control over which traffic routes through the server to get around blocks and which goes direct;
- you only want to send a browser or a specific app through the server, not the whole device.
If you want precise per-app routing while staying in VPN mode, check the split tunneling guide at /en/split-tunneling/.
What proxy mode runs on
VPN and Proxy both run on Xray-core and share the same key issued in the Happ Telegram bot — there's no separate encryption protocol to configure manually; the only difference is how traffic enters the tunnel. Full details are on /en/proxy/.
Turning Proxy on
The mode is switched on directly in the Happ app's settings on the platform you're using, and desktop systems also have a dedicated Happ Proxy Utility that simplifies integrating it with other software. The general connection steps are covered on /en/setup/.
Frequently asked questions
What's the core difference between Proxy and VPN in Happ?
VPN routes the device's entire traffic through a tunnel, while Proxy only routes the apps or browser configured to use the local proxy.
Does Proxy mode need its own key?
No, it uses the same key as VPN mode, issued through the Happ service Telegram bot.
Which platforms support Happ Proxy?
All platforms Happ supports, with an additional utility for desktop systems that simplifies configuration.
Not sure whether to pick VPN or Proxy?
Go with VPN for a simple connect-and-forget setup across the whole device; choose Proxy if you need selective routing for specific programs.
